Sergeant Robert Mogey Sloan
Robert Mogey Sloan was born on 9 June 1894 at Corvally (or Corbally), near Portrush, County Antrim, the last of thirteen children of farmer Abraham Sloan and his wife Jane (née Mogey). By the time of the 1911 Census he was living at Corvally with his widowed father and six of his siblings, and working as a shop assistant.
Sloan enlisted in the North Irish Horse on 19 or 20 October 1914 (No.1323 – later Corps of Hussars No.71335). He remained at the regimental reserve camp at Antrim for much of the war.
In January 1918, however, he embarked for Egypt with a draft of around fifty North Irish Horsemen from the Antrim camp. There he was attached to the 1/1st Staffordshire Yeomanry (Queen's Own Royal Regiment), serving with that regiment in the Palestine campaign.
In August 1918 he was admitted to a Casualty Clearing Station suffering from malaria.
Sloan was demobilised and transferred to Class Z, Army Reserve, on 16 July 1919.
He married Jessie McNeill in Moyle, Northern Ireland, on 27 January 1922 and later emigrated to the United States. He died on 3 May 1956 in the Philadelphia General Hospital, Pennsylvania.
